The Fountain of Youth – A Dream Or Reality?
At some time or other, most people would have given a fleeting thought to the ‘Fountain of Youth’ and what they could do if it really existed. Unfortunately for everyone such a thing only exists in ‘Fairy Tales’ and in the imagination of authors and movie directors where the search finally takes them to the ultimate find after an exhaustive search.
Plastic surgeons attempt to reproduce the effects of youth but only up to a certain point, because as we can all see, too many pulls and fills do leave their undesirable results. The advertisements for looking younger fill countless number of pages of the Internet with promises of achieving a younger looking face.
I suppose like many others, I too believed that the ‘Fountain of Youth’ was nothing more than wishful thinking, but that was until the day a friend I had not seen in over ten years came over for a visit. From the moment I opened the door, there in front of me stood the exact same ‘Rita’ I had known so many years before; who even then had looked young for her age and ad acted accordingly.
As she briskly walked into the house without the slightest hint of arthritis limping or stiffness, she immediately remarked on all the changes I had done to my house, including comments on how much I would have paid: she was spot on. This lady, whose next birthday was going to be seventy eight, had the memory of a twenty year old. There were hardly any wrinkles on a face devoid of make up with only some moisturiser. Her hair was pulled back in the same chignon she had always favoured as a nurse.
As we sat with coffee and biscuits and chatted of what had happened in the last ten years, I slowly began to realize that this women had really found that mystical ‘Fountain of Youth’ and had been bathed by its miraculous water. The most surprising revelation was that the magic had come from the a simplest of spells, ‘work.’
Since I had last seen her, Rita had continued to work as a nurse and when finally she retired from this position, after three weeks of doing nothing and almost going out of her mind, she decided to go into voluntary work. She started with two mornings a week and within three month after continuously winning the award of the week for producing more results then everyone else, she took control of the entire catering business which looks after people in need.
By working, Rita has forgotten to age, simply because she does not have the time and Mother Time herself has forgotten Rita. She is too busy aging and thus has remained young. Unlike so many retired people who cannot wait to join all the senior citizen clubs and slow activities designed for people with aches and pains, she has continued in the lifestyle that she was involved from the age of sixteen. By doing so her body and brain have remained young, and so have her looks and intelligence.
